High School Admissions

The high school application for fall 2021 admissions is now open for families and school staff in MySchools.

Families can now log into MySchools (myschools.nyc), add programs to their “favorites” list, list up to 12 programs on their application in preference order, and submit their application. Our video series includes tutorial videos on how to create an account in MySchools, add your child, and start your high school application. Videos are in English, and translated captions are available at the link above in the nine DOE languages.

School staff can log into the school-facing MySchools site (school.myschools.nyc), to do any of the following:

  • Access account creation codes and student ID numbers to share with families. If you are supporting families remotely, then we recommend providing your families with their Welcome Letter so that families can create an account in MySchools, add their child, and complete their application in the family-facing MySchools site (myschools.nyc). Instructions for school staff to support families with logging into MySchools and providing Welcome Letters are in Section 4 of the MySchools Guide for School Counselors.

  • Enter application choices and submit on behalf of families. Updated instructions for school staff to support students with the high school application are in Section 9 of the MySchools Guide for School Counselors.

  • Make changes to any student’s submitted application on behalf of the family.

  • Download high school application receipts.

Download a printable PDF of each student’s high school application worksheet. These can be printed for families, if necessary.

The deadline for families to submit their high school application is February 23, 2021. Families can make changes to their application at any time until February 23.

The deadline for school staff to enter high school application choices and any other student academic data (when needed) is March 1, 2021. School staff can make changes to any of their current students’ applications at any time until March 1.

Changes to Admissions Methods:

This year due to COVID-19, several admissions methods will operate differently. Details about these changes are available to school staff and families in the updated 2021 NYC High School and Specialized High Schools Admissions Guide at schools.nyc.gov/HSGuide. Families and school staff should make note of the changes to the following admissions methods:

  • Audition

  • Educational Option (Ed. Opt.)

  • Screened

Student data in MySchools:

As in previous years, student data for 8th and 9th grade students in ATS and STARS will automatically appear in MySchools. This data includes:

  • Student biographical data (such as name, ID number, home address, guardian names, etc.)

  • Standardized test scores from spring 2019.

  • Course grades from 2018-2019, and through February 2020.

  • Current instructional program (for determining GE or SWD seat group).

Attendance and punctuality will not be used for admission to any high school program this year.

Student data that is not in ATS or STARS will not appear automatically in MySchools. All school staff (public schools, charter schools, non-public schools) can manually enter student academic data according to the instructions in Section 10 of the MySchools Guide for School Counselors.

Non-public school staff must manually add each student to MySchools according to the instructions in Sections 1 - 3 in the MySchools Guide for School Counselors.

Diversity in Admissions:

Several high schools have new Diversity in Admissions (DIA) initiatives, and several high schools have made changes to their existing DIA initiatives. This affects which applicants to these programs are considered for offers first. The updated list and details are at schools.nyc.gov/DiversityAdmissions.

Families and school staff can also use the online directory in MySchools to find programs with a DIA initiative. Click or tap the “More Filters” button and then choose “Diversity in Admissions.”
